A note on this time of year
This time of year can be so tricky. While our animal brains and bodies may feel like it’s time to hibernate and get cozy and slow, the human brain may feel like “there is so much to do and so much to plan and people to see and promotional emails to look at and gifts to buy!”.
If you feel overwhelmed by the seasonal pressure to BUY BUY BUY and DO DO DO, I encourage you to do whatever you can to honor your own needs and feelings and protect your peace. Unsubscribe, mute, or log out of social media and your email if you need to.
That being said, the sales at this time of year can be pretty crucial for your favorite small businesses, makers, and artists. So if and when you have capacity to participate in email reading, social media browsing, and shopping, please think of your favorite small businesses and support them in whatever ways you can:
Buy your cards from a small printing press
Get cool one-of-a-kind gifts from a quirky artist making things in their living room
Share that cool art you saw on your Instagram story
Forward emails you think your mom or friend or aunt might be interested even if the time isn’t right for you to get something from that maker
Tell people about the makers’ markets you are going to
Or just send a nice text to your self-employed friend who you haven’t heard from in a few weeks - they are probably very stressed and would love to get a little pat on the back
